Resume Basics

  • Use a formal templateProvide accurate dates of employment
    • Sample templates can be found on MS Word or just Google Resume Images
    • Don’t make it fancy – no pictures or graphics unless going for a creative position
  • List most recent work experience first
  • Include any education, skills or certifications
  • Watch your tenses, spelling and verbiage
  • Formatting and layout should be structured and consistent
    • Keep your format simple – if it is not, it will be distorted in uploads into Applicant Tracking Systems

Make your resume shine…

  • Objective: This is important for Recent Graduates or folks changing careers.  As you obtain more experience, this becomes irrelevant and an Objective becomes a Summary.
    • This should be an accurate description of what type of position you are seeking and what traits you have that will make you successful in that role.
  • Summary: This is used for experienced professionals.  A resume summary statement is similar to an objective statement in that it is a quick way for a job seeker to catch a hiring manager’s attention by summarizing critical information at the top of your resume in an easy to read format.  Keep all of the points below in mind when writing your summary, which should not be more than 2-3 sentences (1 paragraph).
    • What are your top selling points? Find three or four things that define you as a professional and are unique to you.
    • What critical problems did you identify in the job posting and how are you positioned to solve them?
    • How does your summary align with the company job requirements?
    • What are your career highlights and key strengths?
    • How much experience do you have in doing what you’re doing?
    • Do you have additional certifications or achievements that set you apart?
    • Where does what you want and bring intersect with what the company wants and needs?
  • Avoid paragraphs – use bullet pointsQualify and Quantify experience and its impact for the company
    • 3-5 bullets under each position is recommended
  • Mention all relevant Volunteer work and Associations
  • Avoid personal hobbies and interests – not relevant
